Military Vehicles Photographic Activity Day

Venue:   Armourgeddon, Husbands Bosworth, Leicestershire

Price:   £145 including buffet lunch and refreshments

This exciting day will not only test your photographic skills but also your ability to drive a 17 Tonne 240BHP tank around an off-road circuit! You will have the chance to take images using a variety of techniques including action shots of moving vehicles, static subjects, low light and close up shots. But on this special activity day you will not only be taking pictures of the vehicles you will also be driving one of them!

On this photographic activity day, we will have exclusive use of this fantastic venue and will enjoy three special access sessions:

Tank Photoshoot:

A member of the Armourgeddon staff will perform a variety of manouvres in an FV432 ‘Berlin Special’ like the one pictured below to enable us to get images of this fantastic vehicle in action. Depending on the weather it may be churning up dust, splashing through puddles or splattering mud everywhere. We will also be using some smoke grenades for extra atmosphere. Practice your moving subject techniques as well as panning and subject tracking.

‘Behind the Barriers’ Museum Photoshoot:

Armourgeddon has a military vehicle museum attached where normally visitors have to stand back to photograph the exhibits. Under supervision from the staff, we have been given special permission to go behind the barriers to get our images and will be allowed to actually climb on and in these vehicles. This will enable us to get images of the insides of vehicles as well as lots of close up details. You will need to use low light techniques and a variety of focal lengths such as wide angle for interiors and telephoto for details.

Tank Driving Experience:

Not only will be taking pictures of these vehicles but we will also be able to drive one! After a safety briefing and instruction we will be split into groups of three and assigned an FV432 which we will take out onto the test track for two laps each. Each group of three will rotate between being the driver and passengers. Passengers will be able to stand up in the turret and we may (subject to permission and weather conditions on the day) be able to take cameras on board to take some tank-to-tank images of our convoy. Please note the following restrictions that will apply to the driving experience:

  • Max Height – 6ft 4′ / 193 cm
  • Max weight – 22 stone / 140 kg

Each of the above sessions will last approximately one hour. Timings for these sessions will be determined on the day depending on weather.

After our special access sessions you will have the opportunity to explore the rest of the public areas of the museum and external exhibits at your leisure until the venue closes. We have exclusive use of the entire site so we won’t be disrupted by members of the public getting in the way of our shots. We will move between you to assist with any photographic queries you may have, suggesting compositions and settings as necessary.

A light buffet lunch of sandwiches and rolls is included together with teas/coffees/squash all day. There is also a cafe on site where you can purchase additional snacks and refreshments.

We will endeavour to keep to the anticipated schedule regardless of weather so please bring a plastic bag or proprietary rain cover to keep your equipment dry during the outdoor sessions if necessary. Overalls and a helmet will be provided for the driving experience but please note that the venue can get extremely muddy, even in good weather, so please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting messed up and ideally bring a change of clothing and wellington boots or other outdoor footwear that you don’t mind getting muddy together with an indoor pair of shoes.

Please note that you will be asked to sign indemnity forms for both Armourgeddon and Wildcard before taking part in the activities.

Pretty much any camera is suitable for this day although DSLR’s are likely to provide the best results. A variety of subject distances will be encountered. A standard zoom and a telephoto zoom would be advantageous for the external sessions and a wideangle zoom may be useful for the interiors of vehicles and the like.

Those with limited photographic experience are welcome but as there is no formal tuition on this activity day we would recommend completing Part 1 of our Photography Course in order to get the most out of the day. If you have any concerns regarding equipment or experience please contact us prior to booking.
