Our courses are suitable for owners of any make of digital camera equipment but should ideally be of the Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) type. Cameras known as SLT (transluscent mirror cameras) are also suitable as are some of the high-end mirrorless cameras such as the Fuji XT range, Olympus OM-D range and Panasonic G range.

Unfortunately, Bridge / Hybrid Cameras and Compact Cameras are not suitable for our courses.

If you haven’t yet bought a camera and are wondering which ones to consider, our article on choosing your first ‘proper’ camera may be of interest.

Not all camera types are suitable for our courses. The common types are:

A Typical DSLR Camera:

The lens is interchangeable. There will be an optical viewfinder. Our courses are optimised for these cameras and they are therefore suitable for all our courses.

Some high-end CSC/mirrorless cameras such as the Fuji XT range operate in a similar way to a DSLR but have an electronic viewfinder. These are also suitable for our courses.

Bridge Camera

A Typical Bridge / Hybrid Camera:

Looks similar to a DSLR but is generally smaller and the lens is not removable. The lens will usually retract part-way into the body when switched off. There will usually be an electronic (rather than optical) viewfinder.

These are not suitable for our Part 1 course but may be suitable for some of our activity days – please contact us.

A Typical Mirrorless or Compact System Camera (CSC):

The lens is interchangeable. There is sometimes not a viewfinder at all or if there is it is likely to be electronic.

Only high end versions of these cameras with manual functions and a viewfinder are suitable for our courses.

A Typical Compact Camera:

The lens is not removable and will usually retract fully into the body when switched off. There is usually not a viewfinder. A ‘pocket sized’ camera.

These are not suitable for our courses.

If you are still unsure whether your camera is suitable for our courses please contact us prior to booking.
